Ebook About A yaoi romance between a good boy who didn’t know he was waiting for a hero, and a bad boy who comes to his rescue! Now a hit streaming anime! “I don’t like caramel sauce. I prefer something bitter…” Masahiro Setagawa doesn’t believe in heroes, but wishes he could: He’s found himself in a gang of small-time street bullies who use him to run errands. But when high school teacher (and scourge of the streets) Kousuke Ohshiba comes to his rescue, he finds he may need to start believing after all…and as their relationship deepens, he realizes a hero might be just what he was looking for this whole time.Book Hitorijime My Hero Vol. 1 Review :
I watched the anime first so I was beyond thrilled to see this available and preordered it as soon as it became available and I’m so glad I did since it was super cute and (almost) as good as the anime.*Minor Spoilers Ahead*First, this is a spinoff of the author’s other story about Asaya and Ken, Hitorijime My Boyfriend, so they’re already an established couple by the time the volume starts and none of the characters are really introduced like they are in the anime so it can be a bit confusing for those of us who haven’t read that volume. Also, there are several characters who appear in the anime who are missing (rainbow sweater dude from the gang, and Kouske’s friends from the bar - Asaya’s older sister and her husband, the detective dude) and who I really missed. The story is much faster paced than the anime and this one volume covers about 95% of the anime’s timeline. It actually makes more sense if you’ve already seen the anime since it explains things which are only barely glossed over in this volume for space sake. The story is still cute and Kouske and Masahiro are just as lovable and adorable as they are in the anime though. Ken is just as happy and sweet, and Asaya is his usual grumpy self. There’s a hilarious moment near the end of the second chapter where Masahiro walks in on an intimate moment between Ken and Asaya which definitely did not appear in the anime and which is completely awesome. There are some more intimate moments, but nothing is shown “on screen" so the volume does not arrive in plastic wrap.On a purely physical note, the volume is slightly larger than my other BL novels, and the cover is matte instead of glossy.Overall, Kouske and Masahiro are adorable whether it’s manga or anime and I highly, highly recommend this for anyone who watched and loved the anime, or anyone who likes BL in general. I am eagerly awaiting the next volume! Kind of torn on this manga as it is for all intents and purposes a mess, but it’s a lovely mess that I just can’t not read. I mean, Setagawa is a good pretty boy character mixed with delinquent tendencies and good home care techniques and I love his personality so much that he just becomes ultra-endearing that you want to see him succeed in all that he does, and some of his friends are great if not too static, which leads me to the main reason I call this a mess is that there is so much potential that remains untapped.Like, just because Oshiba and Asaya come from the previous one volume story, doesn’t mean they need to remain as they were in that story. I kind of wanted them to grow and change. Perhaps Asaya does as he begin to play some time of confidant role with Setagawa instead of being totally aloof, but Oshiba doesn’t. He remains playful, cheerful, and kind of you know out there the whole time and his cheating joke kind of gets old fast. The plot has lots of heart and meaning even if these distracting character growth issues are present. I also enjoyed the bully/gang plot as once again manga has those ultra-polite bullies for some reason and the bullies being best friends with one another and even in some scope they’re friends with Setagawa even. How they step away from the plot is a bit concerning though as one would wondered if there were more times they would have. Perhaps they come back? And I kind of do want to see them again, at least from their parting perhaps some in the gang did have some type of bond with Setagawa that only they could understand and we outsiders couldn't?Much of the plot followed typical genre trends, stifling crushes, hiding relationships in school, juggling relationships and friend ships, and just trying to figure out what to do once in one. It's much of what anyone could write and its done decently that this feels familiar and comfortable.Art can be messy at times, but it can also be really sweet at others. My favorite are always when Setagawa looks happy. My heart goes pitter-patter with affection.Overall it’s a good start to a series and kind of reminds me of someones first attempt at writing a romance story. The pieces and such are in place for a nice story but the execution and character development leaves much to be desired.
